Bedtime Story

Jules Richard: A Secondary School Teacher

Jules Richard after finishing his doctorate taught in several lycées all over the country; you may wonder what a lycée is.

Now you see mon ami, one of the greatest spinoffs of bedtime storytelling or story writing is that I get to travel the whole world without moving an inch from my chair.

It is very similar to the case of the stamp that sits in one corner of the envelope and yet gets to travel the whole world.

At this point I would like to pause and quote Isaac Asimov, one of the few men that I desire to emulate but never can or will:

“It is the writing that teaches you”.

And another quote of him on writing:

“I have never written a book that that didn’t teach me far more than it taught my reader”.

I realized the truthfulness of these statements a bit late in my life but when I did, it changed everything.

Reading is a pleasure but writing is a pure joy.

Writing can immensely satisfy your wanderlust, especially if you have circumnavigated enough.

So sitting here in my shop, I can take you through the French educational system, or at least a part of it.

Lycée is the second and the last stage of secondary education of the French educational system.

Most of us will have very little idea what is meant by secondary education.

By definition, secondary education falls between the first six years of primary education and higher education (or vocation education and employment).

Secondary education in most countries is legally compulsory.

This phase of education is critical as it falls at the adolescent age of the youth, which is the phase of intense and rapid physical, mental and emotional growth of a young human ape.

It is at this age where the future adult gets the values and attitudes (besides knowledge and skills) that were formed at the primary school percolate in and becoming ingrained.

Hence it was these minds that our character of the story Jules Richard was dealing with; quite a noble profession if you ask me though if you see the world around you it does not make you feel so.

To think of it, just how many secondary school teachers really have that feeling that they are building the future of the society?

It is a pity that so much is written and spoken about the army and the military and so tragically ignored are the shapers of the future.

In an ideal world (ideal human ape is an oxymoron), only the best and the most intelligent and the competent member of the intelligentsia should even be allowed to qualify for the post of secondary school teacher.

And yet, it is generally the worst of the left over, the most incapable of the society that end up in choosing this profession, playing recklessly with the destiny of both the society and the nation.

Good night mon ami and my fellow cousin ape.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.

Do visit him here:

All his books can be downloaded for free through this link:
