Bedtime Story
Sins Punishable by Stoning Unto Death
Let me list out some of the crimes that are
punishable by stoning to death as mentioned in the Holy Scriptures of Jewish
Torah and the Hebrew Bible:
Breaking Sabbath (Numbers 15:32)
Enticing others to polytheism (Deuteronomy
13:7-11) – If this were to be executed literally, all Hindus would be stoned to
death
Engaging in idolatry (Deuteronomy 17:2-7) –
not only Hindus this would take down even the entire community of Catholic and
Orthodox Christians
Seducing others into idolatry (Deuteronomy
13:7-12)
Getting married as though a virgin when not
a virgin (Deuteronomy 22:13-21) The punishment of this sin would reduce the
population of women drastically if executed passionately and fanatically
Sexual intercourse between a man and a
woman engaged to another man in a town, since she did not cry out (Deuteronomy
22:23-24)
For the above sin both the parties have
been deemed to sentenced to death by stoning
Forced sexual intercourse between a man and
woman engaged to another man in a field where no one could hear her cries and
save her the man should be stoned (Deuteronomy 22:25-27)
Apostasy from Judaism is perhaps the taken
to be the most serious sin of them all where the whole process is quite
descriptive and I should add extremely vengeful setting an example such that
one else dares even contemplate it.
“If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or
thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which [is]
as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other
gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
[Namely], of the Gods of the people which
[are] round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the [one] end
of the earth even unto the [other] end of the earth;
Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor
hearken unto him;
Neither shall thine eye pity him, nor shalt
thou spare, neither shall thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him;
Thine hand shall be first upon him to put
him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
And thou shalt stone him with stones, that
he die;
Because he has sought to thrust thee away
from the LORD, thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the
house of bondage.” (Deuteronomy 13:6-10)
So it is surprising that the conservative
puritanical people of the Massachusetts Bay Colony did not stone to death
Hester Prynne for the sin of adultery.
But she was disgraced with a diktat to
stand on scaffold for three hours and be exposed to public humiliation.
That was not the end of her ordeal.
