Bedtime Story
This discovery of Leavitt molded a complete new understanding of our place in the universe.
Copernican heliocentrism of 1543 pulverized the we with our earth were the center of the solar system (the known universe then).
Harlow Shapley somewhere in 1910 shook us with the knowledge that the Milky Way is far bigger than it was thought until then.
Even worse, our sun is located in some nondescript location of the galaxy;
That very same sun which all cultures and all religions had worshipped and still worship turned out to be just another average star (just like me being yet another average chimpanzee fancifully labelled by us as Homo sapiens).
Then soon after Hebert Curtis participating in the Great Debate with Shapley in 1920 revealed that our galaxy is simply another unremarkable, ordinary galaxy that our universe is studded with.
Forget our earth, forget our sun, forget our solar system, not even our gigantic galaxy that is spread across 100,000 light years is at the center of our universe.
I must make one thing clear mon ami.
Scientific knowledge is an extremely dangerous tool for our hugely bloated egos; it can crush it in no time with its extremely nasty truths.
For destroying our ego Henrietta Swan Leavitt was nominated for the Nobel Prize in the year 1924 (no less than the great Edwin Hubble had recommended her).
As it turned out, she had died of cancer 3 years earlier.
She was just 53.
Stay tuned to the voice of an average storytelling chimpanzee or login at http://panarrans.blogspot.in/
Good night mon ami and my fellow cousin ape.
