Bedtime Story

Mossad Goes After Adolf Eichmann

After the war, now it was the time for the victims to strike back.

Many survivors of the Holocaust under the leadership of Simon Wiesenthal took on the task of hunting down the Nazis no matter where they would be and bring them to justice.

They came to be known as the Nazi Hunters.

Eichmann may very well have gone unpunished for his crimes but for the death of his father in 1960 which led to the congregation of his entire family, including Eichmann’s brother Otto.

Now Otto had a close resemblance with Adolf Eichmann.

Mossad agents took photographs of all of them, particularly Otto.

Another lead came from the girlfriend of Eichmann’s son Klaus Eichmann in Buenos Aires.

Klaus would often gloat about his father’s Nazi exploits to Sylvia Hermann, his girlfriend.

Sylvia as it turned out was daughter of a half-Jewish German and this information soon reached the prosecutor-general of Hesse in West Germany.

By 1957 Mossad director Isser Harel got to hear about it.

A team was dispatched to Buenos Aires and weeks of surveillance confirmed the identity of the war criminal.

Since Argentina had a known history of sheltering Nazi war criminals and refusing extradition requests, Israeli Prime Minister took the bull by the horn.

He directly passed the order to capture this absconder and bring him to Israel for trial.

Rafael Eitan or “Rafi the smelly” a Mossad and Shin Bet (internal intelligence agency) agent was assigned this task which he accomplished with his eight-man team.

Yet, it was not all this espionage intrigue that stimulated Milgram to perform the Yale experiments.

It was what Adolf Eichmann said and his anomalous demeanor during the trial that struck him odd.

Adolf Eichmann quite surprisingly seemed to display no sign of guilt, nor remorse nor regret considering the enormity of his crime.

In his 1960 pardon plea this is reflected absolutely clearly:

“There is a need to draw a line between the leaders responsible and the people like me forced to serve as mere instruments in the hands of the leaders.

“I was not a responsible leader, and as such do not feel myself guilty”.

It was these words that kept ringing in the brain of the fresh doctor of psychology from Harvard now an assistant professor at Yale.

Another great educator and teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an IIT graduate and a former professor at BARC, actually does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.
