Bedtime Story

Annunciation in Quran

I shall continue with Biblical account of the Annunciation as stated in Luke 1 tonight.

31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.

32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.

The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,

33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendents forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be”, Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be to unable to conceive is in her sixth month.

37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.

May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Then the angle left her.

This is the end of the biblical description of the Annunciation affair, a story that even an average child can conjure up from her average mind.

Not surprisingly (since Quran assumes familiarity with major narratives recounted in the Biblical scriptures – even Bible exist in several versions with the Hebrew version recognizing just 24 books and Catholic Church Bible recognizing 73 books), the Annunciation has also been described in Quran.

In fact, Jesus is mentioned more often in Quran than Mohammad and Moses as a person is mentioned the most number of times in Quran relative to any other person including Mohammad.

Besides Jesus and Moses, many others characters of Bible find a place in Quran such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Job, David, Solomon, John the Baptist and many others.

The odd thing, which would come much to the surprise of Christians if only they were aware of it, is that many of the above mentioned Biblical characters have been listed as Prophets of God or Prophets of Islam.

Quran, quite in contrast to the behavior of its adherents, has a distinctively positive relationship with the older religious books such as the Torah (five books that include Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy), the Gospels and the Bible implicitly stating that they have all have come from one god.

Here is how Quran puts it in 3:3

“It is He who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, conforming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion between right and wrong.”

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.
