Bedtime Story

'What is Truth?'

With the states failing their legal contracts it does not come as a surprise then that the human apes need to resort to Gods once again.

Conversely, nations where the state is able to carry out its promises as envisaged in a constitution to a very large extent such as the case is with the Scandinavian nations, the belief in god in very minimal and near irrelevant.

Hence it did not come as a surprise to me to know that a study revealed that only 24% of Danes and 16% of Swedes believe in personal god.

When the state is able to play out its role and function the way it was meant to – which is nothing less than playing the god – the need or demand for god shrinks dramatically.

Such kind of social security is very new in the history of human apes and even then only a fraction of human apes have been and are fortunate enough to experience it.

What most of us go through our lives in our interaction with the state is the normal or default mode and it has generally been that away even in the oldest of the civilizations even though there certainly must have been benefits.

The problem eventually lies in the fact that most nations or civilizations are resource-deficit and hence provide enough even for its “state” what the state is supposed to provide for its citizens thereby making each citizen a burden for the state rather than an asset.

In fact , even the pension that is required to be provided for the retired members of the “state” eventually ends up becoming a burden for the society thereby chucking out one of its duties ‘(h) That, state will bear the burden of supporting him when he becomes weak and aged’ for a six.

Now let us return to the faqir of Nazareth and see how fate played out with him.

We saw some nights ago that when interrogated directly by the fifth prefect of the Roman province of Judea Pontius Pilate Jesus made an unequivocal stand that tax must not be evaded and has to be paid.

With that the charge of treason and sedition against the state and thereby Caesar collapsed for it was perhaps taken for granted that the man who called himself the son of God and the King of Jews would not be a liar (I personally would be more skeptical of such men and their tall claims).

There is a very interesting painting based on this event painted by the artist Nikolai Nikolaevich Ge of the Russian Empire who was raised as an orphan, educated himself in physics and mathematics from Kiev and Saint Petersburg University respectively but then gave up his career in science to pursue arts.

He graduated with a gold medal from the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg and then went on to bring alive on the canvass several historical and religious scenes which went on to become his leitmotif.

This painting rendered in 1890 goes by the title ‘What is truth’ based on the dialogue that took place between Jesus and Pilate as described in the Gospel of John.

When Jesus describes his mission as to come into this world to witness the truth Pilate makes this famous reply as mentioned in John 18:38, “What is truth?”

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.
