Bedtime Story
Sylvio Gesell and Freiwirtschaft
Gesell published his novel ideas that
involved both monetary and land reform through his 1916 magnum opus ‘The
Natural Economic Order’ in Bern, Switzerland.
The trend in those years particularly in
Europe and Russia following the October Revolution was towards collectivism and
planned economy (more so in the aftermath of the 1890 Crisis of Argentina,
Encilhamento in Brazil, 1910 economic break in the United States along with the
rise of powerful and concerted labor unions in Britain followed by widespread
strikes in 1910 that included railways, transport, docks, coal mines that came
at a massive cost to the British economy).
It was generally agreed that free market or
capitalism if you wish to call it was not the best system since it was
inherently unstable ridden with almost near-certain and inevitable cyclical
depressions, crashes, bouts of high unemployment and labor exploitation.
In this background Marxist and Communist
ideas would obviously sound very appealing and attractive to most human apes as
most of us are generally average and belong to low to moderate income
category.
He sought to disagree with the trend by
proposing his radical ideas what in his view was a solid basis for economic
liberalism.
Economic liberalism, one must understand,
is a rather simple economic philosophy which allows for economic decisions as
far as possible to be made by the individuals rather than organizations for
individuals.
The most crucial aspect of his economic
foundation was to take into account human nature and accept the self-interest
that each individual ape works for.
To him such a display of self-interest (or greed
which is more often the case) is both natural and good.
Any economic system that would be devised
without taking into account individual talent and proclivities would eventually
fail, a stance that by all means goes against Marxism.
It is for this fatal flaw that Gesell
always considered Marxism a non-workable proposition in a real world.
Gesell coined a German word for his idea
‘Freiwirtschaft’ which means ‘free economy’ which is founded upon three Fs:
(1) Freigeld or free money: According to
this idea all the money that will be issued by the state will be for a limited
period and a constant value so as to avoid the damaging effects of inflation or
devaluation of the currency.
What would be allowed to be traded and
fluctuate would be either shares/stocks or bonds.
(2) Freiland or free land:
No land can be owned privately and this is
the most controversial aspect of his economic theory and ranks it with
left-wing market anarchist.
This would be unacceptable to most of us
living in current times but please pause to look at the reasoning behind it.
The idea behind making the land being
commonly owned or being held by the state was to promote talent, equality and
free chances for all.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is
Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.
While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic
engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and
physics.
He started the participation of Indian students at the
International Physics Olympiad.
