Bedtime Story
Not All Religions Curb Curiosity
We shall return to the conservative laws
and their mathematical investigations after we understand the origins of
symmetry and invariance.
Let us now return to the question of the
difference between a friar which Luca Pacioli was and a monk.
It is not for pedantic or superfluous
reasons that I am going over the subtle difference between two closely sounding
words.
While I am no fan of religions, I wish to
show that some type of religions encourage engagement with the world, reality
and promote questioning.
It still amazes me that one of the greatest
discoveries of the twentieth century, that the universe is expanding, was
theoretically proposed first by a Belgian Catholic priest Georges Lemaître.
Do not mistake it for some cranky and
absurd guesswork.
Lemaître actually derived it by applying
Einstein’s general theory of relativity to cosmology and in this aspect itself
he was a pioneer.
Many others, including Buddhism which I
personally tend to favor over the rest, have a tendency of self-censorship in
the form of meditation, soul-searching and broadly introspection which becomes
a disability or perhaps even a liability for the society.
This introspectiveness comes at the price
of lack of inquisitiveness, annihilation of curiosity and inaction towards
probing of nature that is non-constructive and has been proven destructive over
time for civilizations down the lane in the course of history.
It is quite possible or maybe likely that
both monks and friars are type of people who are not willing to handle all the
troubles that are needed to go in what is required for an average kind of human
life.
Even rearing a small family takes its toll
on many, both physical and mental, though for few it is a goading reason to
excel.
But where they do differ is that wherein
monks tend to isolate or cut-off themselves from any kind of meaningful social
life the friars despite taking vows of chastity, poverty and obedience to their
evangelical counsels, work in the service of the society.
Whereas monks live in cloistered self
sufficient commune of their own types, friars live and work amongst normal
average people (thereby to some extent sharing their adversities and
afflictions) and take support of charity and donations.
Both Gregor Mendel and Luca Pacioli were
friars and not monks, the former being an Augustinian friar and the later being
Franciscan friar.
Both are Catholic religious orders and that
should suffice for all practical purposes; we are really not keen to care about
intricate religious differences as that is not our area of interest and never
will be.
We shall always once in a while delve into
religions of the world since they have always inspired, quite incongruously in
my opinion, astounding art and architecture besides having an all pervasive
influence into both the past and existing literatures of all societies.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is
Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.
While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic
engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and
physics.
He started the participation of Indian students at the
International Physics Olympiad.
