Bedtime Story

Ivy League

Average apes also know that Ivy League universities have reputed standard of education and are extremely difficult to get admitted into (besides being prohibitively expensive).

But what exactly constitutes Ivy League universities is much lesser known to most.

Eight private universities that lie in the Northeastern United States are jointly known as Ivy League.

The eight members of the Ivy League from the most well known to the least familiar include:

Harvard University – in the state of Massachusetts and city of Cambridge

Princeton University - in the state of New Jersey and in the municipality of Princeton

Yale University – in the state of Connecticut and in the coastal city of New Haven

Cornell University – in the state of New York and in the lake city of Ithaca

Columbia University – in the state of New York and in the Upper Manhattan of the New York City

University of Pennsylvania – often referred to as pen in the state of Pennsylvania and in the city of West Philadelphia nicknamed as West Philly

Brown University – in the state of Rhode Island and in the city of Providence and finally

Dartmouth College – in the state of New Hampshire and in the town of Hanover with a population of less than 10,000

Dartmouth College is also the only university among the eight to be called as a “College” for reasons that that are probably historical rather than anything of significance.

Contrary to what one would expect these top eight Universities were first united not for the reasons of any scientific achievement or education but intercollegiate athletics and sports.

In 1945 after the War ended the president of these eight universities or schools as they are also often called signed their first Ivy group agreement whose core tenet was as:

“The members of the Group reaffirm their prohibition of athletic scholarships.

Athletes shall be admitted as students and warded financial aid only on the basis of the same academic standards and economic need as are applied to all other students.”

Till 1960s these eight schools kept their undergraduate programs only for men (and perhaps only for white Americans).

Till this date the Ivy League is associated with the upper class WASPs of the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, possessing inherited wealth and tracing their ancestry to the British gentry of the America colonial period.

Upper and middle class white students of affluence still dominate the campus with proportion of less-affluent students remaining low though attempts are being made to make the student body economically and ethnically diverse.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.

Do visit him here:
