Bedtime Story
Understanding Brain of True-Believers
This set of nouveau True-Believers are far
smarter (and perhaps wiser if that expression can be used for blind faith
holders) than the stupid Millerites (even today’s Adventists would agree with
me I think on this) by accepting that Jesus second coming is imminent (citing
Revelation 10;6 “that there should be time no longer”) but not prescribing any
specific date.
This rules out any disappointment as was
suffered by Americans on October 22, 1844.
This is one of the few instances in the
history of human apes where the apes did learn - at least something (i.e., not
specifying any date and keeping it vaguely “imminent”) - from history.
By the way, most rationalists and critical
thinkers do not seem to understand the minds of True-Believers and what their
beliefs are based upon.
Let me take the case of Protestantism –
which is the opponent and biggest critic of Roman Catholic Church even
sometimes bigger than the rationalists – and tell what the basic tenants of a
Protestant are.
Consider them as axioms and once you see it
as an axiomatic system (the way mathematics is) then a Protestant will have to
be a Protestant and nothing else.
It is as simple as that.
One – Sola Scriptura (Latin for ‘by
scripture alone’) Bible is the highest source of authority and that “Biblical
Christianity” ought to be the foundation for a true Protestant rather than
“Church Christianity” as practiced by the Roman Catholic Church.
“Church Christianity” is frowned upon as it
makes the Pope, his diktat and his rituals the center of entire edifice.
Two – Sola Fide (Latin for ‘by faith alone’)
which means that believers simply need to believe and have faith (rather than
act) to justify their religiosity.
Holding faith is enough to achieve salvation
and forgiveness for their sins.
In short, every ape is given a cart blanche
freedom as long as he or she holds faith.
Third – Sola Gratia (Latin for ‘be grace alone’)
which excludes merit done by a person in achieving salvation.
Fourth – Solus Christus (Latin for ‘only
Christ’) which means that a protestant will use Christ as the mediator between
man and God and not earthly priests.
Fifth – Soli Deo Gloria (Latin for ‘glory
to God alone’) which essentially excludes everything else besides Jesus and God
such as mother of Jesus, saints, angels and other such sundry characters.
So now just imagine that a human ape (True-Believer)
who considers these five axioms as starting points around which all his life
and beliefs and universe revolves.
Then in this case anything –fact, evidence,
logic, rationality- which contradicts these axioms would be to this person “wrong”,
incoherent, incompatible and unacceptable since they violate his foundations.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is
Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.
While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic
engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and
physics.
He started the participation of Indian students at the
International Physics Olympiad.
