Bedtime Story

Unity of Science Movement

This group, the Unity of Science to my mind, is probably the most progressive and enlightened assemblage of people in the history of humanity.

I shall try to list out their ideals which I think it is of utmost relevance to everybody and anybody who is even slightly interested in truth and science.

For this group, the first and foremost understanding was that science is common human cultural endeavor studying a single reality.

Scientists, no matter who they are and where they are at work, are NOT indulging themselves in the search of alternative truths (as often propagated by spiritual and religious types).

Secondly, science’s perspective of nature is hierarchical and sees the world around it in different levels of organization.

Physics is the most basic of the sciences and it forms the basis for chemistry.

Chemistry in turn forms the basis for biochemistry which in turn forms the basis of biology.

Biology and life is not special, but a product of chemistry.

Biology in its own turn due to its tremendous and ever increasing complexity gives rise to psychology that not only supports but also gives rise to mathematics and logic.

Mathematics and logic end up in returning back to form the pillars upholding physics.

This was the second important feature of the foundations of the unity of science group.

The third and final contention of this motley group of people was that the laws of science are common and universal and apply to all levels of organization.

Different disciplines may emphasize some laws over the other, yet the absoluteness of the laws remains intact.

The best example being the laws of thermodynamics which biology may seem to defy but in fact, it doesn’t.

I would not apologize for delving a bit deep into the story of Vienna Circle and Unity of Science movement as these directly helped in saving Alfred Tarski’s life.

Good night and my fellow cousin ape.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.

Do visit him here:

All his books can be downloaded for free through this link:
