Bedtime Story
Peano's Formulario Mathematico and Latino sine flexione
Not surprisingly, Peano became a full professor at the University
of Turin at the age of 32 in the year 1890.
The very next year he started a project of writing an encyclopedia
of mathematics that he called “Formulario Mathematico” or the Formulations of Mathematics.
In it Peano wrote down all the known theorems and formulae of
mathematics in a formal symbolic language that he himself had devised.
Peano like a true mathematician was obsessed with rigor and
presented a paper in 1900 titled “How do you define a definition?”
Peano’s obsession with formality and precision later extended even
to use of words and hence in 1903 he started a new project that went by the
name of Latino sine flexione or Latin
without Inflections.
It was largely Latin but without its inflections.
Inflection of a language refers to alteration or modification of its
words to express various grammatical categories sometimes also known as
grammeme.
These grammatical categories include tense, gender, case (Russian
padezh), voice, moods etc.
Peano went so far as to state:
“The best grammar is no grammar”, citing the example of Chinese.
Let me cite one example how Latin without inflections looked like.
Take the famous English proverb:
He that laboureth not, let him not eat.
In Latin, it translates as:
Qui non laborat, non manducet.
In Peano’s Latino sine
flexione it became:
Qui non labora, non debe manduca.
In Peano’s hypothetical English without flexion it would read out
as:
He who not labour, he not eat.
Not only Peano compiled this whole new language, he even published
several of his papers in this new Latino
sine flexione, Latin that was virtually stripped off of all grammar.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is
Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.
While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic
engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and
physics.
He started the participation of Indian students at the
International Physics Olympiad.
