Bedtime Story
Caltech in Pasadena
Caltech in Pasadena
After his college Kuppermann earned a PhD
degree in neuroscience from a place none other than California Institute of
Technology following which he earned a medical degree from the University of
Miami in Florida.
California Institute of Technology is, in
the great American tradition of shortening long names, known as Caltech is a
private research university that specializes in granting doctorate degree.
The acceptance rate of Caltech is a mere
8.8% one of the reasons for that being that it maintains one of the lowest
faculty to student ratios among the Universities of the United States.
This allows for a far more personalized and
intimate learning experience and interaction for the privileged students of
this top ranking university.
Its location too is appealing for many in
contrast to the Northeastern United States which has cold, wet and often
overcast winters worsened by recurrent extreme events such as ice storms,
floods, hurricanes and major storms in in the Atlantic Ocean often known as
nor’easters.
Caltech in contrast lies in sunny Pasadena
which is located just 16 kilometers northeast of Downtown Los Angeles.
Pasadena has a perfect balmy Mediterranean
climate with hot summers and cool winters and is generally sunny with clear
blue skies throughout the year.
I happened to visit Pasadena to witness its
well-known Rose Parade consisting of flower-covered floats, marching bands and
equestrian units that is held on New Year’s Day or on Monday the 2nd
if the New Year happens to fall on Sunday.
I will be attaching a picture of it taken
by me in this story.
Caltech has an intense rivalry with
Massachusetts Institute of Technology as both consider themselves the number
one school in science and technology even though geographically they could not
have been separated wider apart in the mainland United States.
A doctorate degree from Caltech can take
anywhere from 5 to 6 years to complete and is highly valued all over the world.
While I did my internship at J.J Group of
Hospitals in Bombay he did it from University of Southern California Medical
Center.
This was followed by his residency in
ophthalmology from the same Southern California Medical Center which is yet
another three year stint.
Getting a residency in ophthalmology is
through a highly competitive process that involves clearing the three-step
examination of the USMLE or the United States Medical Licensing Exam which even
foreign medical graduates are allowed to appear for.
It is an examination that is a mandatory
requisite to obtain medical licensure to freely practice within the United
States.
What it means is essentially this – even if
you have done your MD from top medical school say for instance Harvard Medical
School and completed your internship from a reputed hospital it is still not
assumed by the system that you are qualified enough to practice medicine.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is
Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.
While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic
engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and
physics.
He started the participation of Indian students at the
International Physics Olympiad.
