Bedtime Story
Assessment of Health Providers in United States
United States Medical Licensing Exam is one
of the most comprehensive knowledge and medical skill testing system ever
devised that covers applied knowledge of theoretical branches of medicine applicable
to a competent physician.
The questions seek to judge if the
physician has both the knowledge and reasoning ability to make a sound clinical
diagnosis and have a right approach to its treatment.
It assesses the physician’s ability in
surprisingly various ways covering all the aspects of medicine that are often
left incomplete in other examination systems that have been devised by other
societies and civilizations.
Most other third-world countries and even
the first-world ones try to emulate this system though they fail to reach the
standards set by the United States both in its universality and fairness.
The system works so well because the
examinations are expensive (and hence its employees paid well so as to deter
them from corruption), double-blinded and largely free of bias, influence and
nepotism.
Besides the income generated from the
students who appear for the examinations they are also supported by the
Federation of State Medical Boards and National Board of Medical Examiners.
It is fascinating to know that the nation
established this National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) as early as in 1915
when the world (Europe primarily) was hell bent on destroying itself during the
First World War.
So it means the nation was already
preparing itself to be extremely selective and choosy in deciding the
competency of physicians who would be allowed to practice.
The thing about United States is that no
matter what it is claimed, they make sure that money and income is generated to
support that system because they are fully aware of the human nature.
Human apes like any other primate or
animals species, are inherently selfish and are bound to work for their
interest first and foremost rather than any self proclaimed ideology, religion
or higher ethereal and ephemeral purpose.
In fact, it is my strong advice to you (I
know it is unsought and unsolicited for) that if anyone who claims to be
working for a cause or public good (like the politicians or priests and gurus)
be extremely vary of such apes.
They are either out there to con you or
worst - if sincere – have managed to completely delude themselves.
If any system is not self-reliant and is
incapable of generating wealth to support itself sooner or later it will
collapse, may it bank, board, a nation or an Empire.
So this NBME which is supposedly a
not-for-profit organization posted $218,671,884 in publicly traded market securities.
The mission of the board, as claimed by it,
is “to protect the health of the public through state of the art assessment of
health professionals.”
The board further goes on to say about its
mission that “while NBME’s mission is centered on assessment of physicians,
this mission encompasses the spectrum of health professionals along the continuum
of education, training …”

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is
Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.
While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic
engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and
physics.
He started the participation of Indian students at the
International Physics Olympiad.
