Bedtime Story
Continuation of Rounds of Marriage Proposals
Tonight we shall continue with our example
of the four eligible bachelors proposing to four women in their village where
currently first round is in progress.
In the very first round the four men have
made their marriage proposal to their topmost favorite women who happen to be
Jenny in case of three and April in case of one.
So April receives just one proposal which
comes from John.
Note that two women Lilly and June have not
received any proposal from any man in the first round.
Now Jenny has a choice to make out of three
men who proposed to her and since one of the men who proposed to her is Charles
who also happens to be her first choice she will accept him and rejects Richard
and Albert.
Since April has received just one proposal
which is from John she will hold on to him for now.
So after the end of this first round we
have two tentative pairs of Jenny-Charles and April-John.
In the second round the two men who were
rejected by Jenny, namely Richard and Albert will propose to women of their
second choice (remember that they can’t propose to the same woman twice which
means they gradually have to climb down the rungs of hierarchy of their choices).
This means that Richard will propose to
Lilly who is single and available and Albert to April who is already engaged to
John through the first round.
Lilly will accept Richard for now simply
because in the second round this is the only offer she is getting.
But what do you think April will do?
In April’s list of preference Albert is the
number one choice and therefore she will not hesitate to discard John and switch
him for Albert instead.
This means John is once again back in the
marriage market.
So by the end of second round we have three
tentative engagements namely Jenny-Charles, April-Albert and Lilly-Richard.
Then you initiate the third round wherein
the leftover John proposes to his second preference Lilly.
What do you think Lilly will do with the
proposal of John?
Of course, she will grab it literally
simply because in her list of preference John is number one and she will let go
of Richard who is now single and back in the marriage market.
At the end of the third round we again have
three tentative engagements namely Jenny-Charles, April-Albert and Lilly-John.
Now the fourth round begins.
In this round Richard proposes to the woman
of his third preference namely June for whom alas Richard is the last choice.
So what do you think June will do?
