Bedtime Story

End of Lord Byron

All these wars were a heavy price to pay for the other empires as well as we saw in the case of France and the French Revolution.

One of the primary reasons for the revolution were such multiple wars being waged abroad by French soldiers.

This is not to say the Ottomans were all by themselves as they too had their own ideological and religious vassals that included eyalets of Egypt, Algeria and Tripolitania.

One of the supporters of Greeks revolutionaries turned out to be father of Lady Ada Lord Byron who too was convinced enough that he needed to save the Christian cultural heritage that originated with the Greeks from the dark skinned Sultans.

For the war that was never his, he not only abandoned his wife but also his mistress who in turn had abandoned her husband to stay with him.

Byron spent considerable fortune of his in the war for Greeks even selling off his estate Rochdale Manor in Scotland.

He was spending his money in pound sterling which in today’s estimate would have been millions of dollars.

Byron had become the subject of solicitation of multiple group of Greek revolutionaries as news spread far and wide that a fabulously wealthy British Aristocrat famous for his generosity had come down to fight for the Greeks.

Greek then was a desperately poor country.

Byron was going all out to help the Greeks in their war of independence as seen by this letter that he wrote to his agent in Scotland, “I should not like to give the Greeks but a half helping hand” which made his intentions clear of spending his entire fortune on this war.

He developed a serious fever in 1824 and died most likely of sepsis that probably developed due to unscientific “treatment” of bloodletting with unsterile instruments.

Whatever Lord Byron may have been, he was no father to Ada Byron having abandoned both her, her mother Anne Isabella and his country England forever never to see all three ever again.

Even that one year when he was with his wife Anne Isabella, Byron’s life was replete with extra marital affairs and sexual escapades with multiple women making life of Anne Isabella both misery and hell.

It may be that Anne Isabella would have been greatly relieved when she got rid of this vile and crazy sexual maniac for good.

Yet it is well known that even till her very end she was obsessed with this man who she always knew had a streak of madness in him.

Anna Isabelle or Lady Byron herself was a very intelligent woman apparently even having the gift of mathematics in her.

She feared that her daughter might inherit the madness from her father and to root it out she decided to give her daughter rigid education from home in mathematics and science through the best of private tutors.
