Bedtime Story

May 29, 1938 Anti-Antisemitism Becomes Legalized

So it is only with the advantage of hindsight can one judge the actions of European leaders such as Hungarian’s Horthy as erroneous but in those times the Communist fear was far more actual and real.

In fact it is said that Horthy was haunted with the Communist threat so obsessively that one could label it as a kind of phobia as is revealed by his anti-Communist tirades in front of his officers and diplomats.

To Miklos Horthy the Communist danger was crystal clear, ever-present and too close for comfort.

Horthy saw his country trapped between two great dangers – one Hitler’s Germany and the other Communist Soviet – and to be fair to him he had very little room for political maneuver.

He felt that it served his nation better to ally with Hitler for two reasons.

One for economic reasons as stated above and secondly and also equally importantly he believed that by allying his country with Hitler he would be able to reverse the territorial loss that his country had suffered with the Treaty of Trianon.

Yet even then what he did, or rather what the Hungary society did to their own Jews, is unpardonable.

You may say “This is rich – coming from a Hindu living in a nation where such type of state-backed genocide is a norm occurring with chillingly regular frequency” and I would accept that.

But then I am also the story telling chimpanzee that has the luxury to sit back and observe other apes from a distance with a far more detached view than most would be able to.

It was under Horthy on May 29, 1938 that the first discriminatory laws were promulgated that openly restricted the number of Jews in commercial enterprises, banks and press.

The number among the physicians, engineers and lawyers were capped at twenty percent.

The second anti-Jewish laws were ushered in almost a year later on May 05, 1939 that actually gave a definition to the Jews.

Any individual – even though is he had converted to Christianity or declared himself an atheist – would be classified as a Jew as long as he had grandparents who were Jewish.

Even an ancestry of mere two grand parents would suffice one to get the tag of this much despised race.

Just look at the appalling conditions imposed upon any person who could be even remotely be classified as a Jew.

Such a person would be absolutely forbidden to hold any post in government service.

Such a person could not be an editor of any newspaper which essentially meant the voices of a large and perhaps the most important chunk of the minority was not merely muffled and gagged shut.

At least no criticisms of the government concerning Jewish section of the population would ever appear in the press from that day on.

Good night Mon Ami and my fellow cousin ape.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.
