Bedtime Story

Enactment of Series of Anti-Jewish Laws under Regent Horthy and PM Teleki

The number of actors in theaters, physicians in hospitals, lawyers in law firms and engineers in any private company were curtailed to a mere 6% of the total employees.

This was further compounded by yet another sub section of the law that restricted any private company from employing more than 12% Jews.

When this second law came into force (and unlike in India where laws are simply unimplementable due to sheer overpopulation with law enforcing officers either getting deluged with cases of violations or simple overlooking their duty of implementation of law enforcement on accepting bribes small European nations are far more effective) some 250,000 Hungarian Jews immediately lost their income.

Not only did they lose their income and voice in the press or any form of media very soon they lost their voting right too.

After the passage of the second law and by the end of 1939 in the entire Hungary a paltry and handful of 38 privileged Jews were left with the right to vote.

If you thought that the degradation of an entire race or religion was complete and total you would be surprised for on August 08, 1941 the so-called “Third Jewish Law” came into force.

This law absolutely prohibited intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews now making its way into the personal lives of all the Hungarian citizens.

Even a playful or casual sexual encounter of any Hungarian with a Hungarian Jew was criminalized.

The “Third Jewish Law” had in one of its sections a law that went something like this: A Jewish man who had a non-marital sex with a “decent non-Jewish woman resident in Hungary” would be sentenced to three years in prison.

The law, of course was biased, penalizing only the Jewish partner in this “sexual misconduct”.

I do not know but am almost certain that Hungarian courts of those days would swiftly end such cases with a guilty verdict on the flimsiest of excuses as the judges like all other members of the society were as guilty as the leaders such as Miklos Horthy in harboring anti-Semitic sentiments.

In short, for the entire society and thereby the judiciary as well, a Jew was guilty unless proven otherwise and the farcical trial would proceed as if the accused Jew owned the burden of innocence rather the prosecutor the burden of proof.

In a letter that the Regent wrote to his Prime Minister Count Pal Teleki (a learned man and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences) regarding his opinion of Jews that is only a reflection of the general sentiment of the Hungarian population (and perhaps Europe as a whole much akin to the kind of sentiment today’s world has for Moslems):

“As regards the Jewish problem, I have been an anti-Semite throughout my life (many right-wing Hindus and Christians today would identify with this sentiment and have the very similar feelings towards Moslems today).

I have never had contact with the Jews (this is not surprising for if you work or especially trade with the races that you fear or dislike you will realize that their general characteristics are no different from that of yours).”

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.
