Bedtime Story

Jeckeln Killing Efficiency

The men from semi-militarized police force Orpo were thus assigned to lead the inmates to the killing grounds.

In the killing grounds three or more deep pits would have already have been dug out and the idea was to use all the three pits simultaneously to maximize efficiency.

This is somewhat akin to any typical fast food American outlets exemplified by McDonald’s wherein multiple counters are setup that are to serve the roaring hungry patrons as fast and as consistently as humanly possible.

The procedure that is set in place is unshakable, the crew trained in one specific task that on repeated performance enhances their speed at it and eventually the whole ecosphere around food service ends up becoming a mechanized production line system which as a customer you in all probability would not be able to grasp.

At least I was not able to when I ate my first hamburger at a McDonald’s in Moscow in the year of 1993 on the Pushkin Square after Mon Ami described to be in great detail how its French fries were cut exactly the same way, fried perfectly to its golden yellow color and salted just enough to make you long for more.

He had his before me in the summer of 1992 and since then has always stayed one step ahead of me (or maybe several steps) in everything else in life.

In fact to me it felt like a pleasure jaunt.

Just as an aside this one was the first McDonald’s outlet that had opened in Russia barely few years ago on January 31, 1990 after 13 years of negotiation with the Communist Party and 50 million dollars of “investment”.

Why did the company spend so much?

This is because they knew that this project would be doomed or rather destined for success in a market craving for American good and Capitalism.

This is perhaps the only place in the world where the McDonald’s philosophy of quick assembly line servicing collapsed simply because on its opening day 30,000 hungry Russians turned up to feast on a legendary American delight.

Denial creates the greatest cravings and the best customers.

Aravind Eye Care System wherein I was trained to perform cataract surgeries had similarly developed a remarkably efficient and effective semi-assembly line methodology for performing high-volume and at the same time safe surgeries with complication and infection rates compatible to those of the western world eye hospitals and infirmaries.

A team of young ophthalmologists with a senior nurse (her name was Veni who kept us terrified and disciplined, kept us on tight leash and reported directly to the top founding fathers - in this case it was the founding mother- of the institute) was designated to anesthetize the eye to be operated in the waiting room.

Then inside the OR operating nurses specially trained to do cleaning, draping and preparing would set the stage ready for the surgeon.

These nurses were so good that they would even carry out the first step of the surgery which was to hook up the superior muscle of the eyeball that makes you look up.

Another great educator and a teacher that I am aware of is Professor Subhashish Chattopadhyay in Bangalore, India.

While I narrate stories, Professor Subhashish an electronic engineer and a former professor at BARC, does and teaches real mathematics and physics.

He started the participation of Indian students at the International Physics Olympiad.
