August 22, 2016 Monday

Today we prepared all the documents.

And some pictures.

My IO Inspector Deshmukh told me that today he has called
Ramniklal Veera to give his statement for the FIR that has been
lodged against him.

Bedtime Story

The experiment that Stanley Miller conducted, first at the University of Chicago in 1952 and later at the newly formed University of California, San Diego (UCSD) was a chemical one.

Miller used water (H2O), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2).

(Many apologies for my inability to write numerals in subscript and in superscript formats on Whatsapp though I usually correct this in my blogs as I have done above on hindsight)

These chemicals in their gaseous forms were sealed inside a sterile 5-liter glass flask mimicking earth's primitive atmosphere.

Sterility was of paramount importance.

This glass flask was connected by thin glass tubing with another smaller flask containing water.

This smaller flask was heated to promote evaporation and this vapor was allowed to enter the larger flask.

The gas filled flask along with the hot water vapor was subjected to continuous electrical sparks fired between the electrodes that mimicked lightening.

This residual air was made to cool and condense and collect by trickling into a U-shaped trap.

Miller let this experiment run for days.

In 24 hours, the solution in the trap had turned pink.

At the end of 7 days of continuous exercise, Miller carefully disassembled the experiment, adding mercuric chloride to prevent microbial contamination.

Remember, sterility was critical for the validity of this experiment (much more than even our ocular surgeries).

Further reaction was stopped by adding barium hydroxide and sulfuric acid and the mixture evaporated to remove impurities.

Miller then carefully subjected the residue to paper chromatography which itself was discovered in 1943, just 9 years before Miller was conducting his experiment.

(Its pioneers were yet more forgotten men
Richard Synge and
Archer Martin
Both British biochemist).

So what did Miller discover in the paper chromatography?

We shall keep this in nerve racking suspense and go over it tomorrow if time permits.

Stay tuned to the voice of an average storytelling chimpanzee or login at http://panarrans.blogspot.in/

Good night mon ami and my fellow cousin ape.
